Doce años de esclavitud - Twelve Years a Slave

M
y work , Doce años de esclavitud, the translation to Spanish of Solomon Northrup's narrative, Twelve Years a Slave is now available. It tells a story of slavery in the USA that not so many people are aware of, but everyone should know. "Twelve Years a Slave"  is the chronicle of the horrific experiences of a free Afro-American male who was kidnapped in the country's capital and sold as a slave in Louisiana. It is one of the most convincing and detailed slavery narratives that we have, and now available in Spanish,
Doce años de esclavitud.

Northrup resisted the urge to laud himself as an exemplary character, and gives contemporary readers a remarkable account of the lives of the slave community as a whole. As an educated man, torn from freedom and plunged into slavery, he brings into horrible and tantalizingly exact clarity the life and labor of slaves on the plantations of the antebellum American South, the complex, economic choices and ironic moral concessions of slave-holding, and the calamitous effect of slavery on the foundations of civilization.

I have never been so moved during an entire movie as I was when I saw the Oscar-winning film version of, Twelve Years a Slave. The fact that I was so moved was a sign to me that I needed to do something with this topic. When I found out there were not any translated versions on the market, I knew what I had to do – translate the narrative of Solomon Northrup to Spanish. It is my belief that native Spanish-speaking individuals who have not yet mastered English deserve to have access to a work of such historical significance. It will also be great for students of the Spanish language, as a way to increase their vocabulary, as well as a way to learn more about this chapter in the history of the USA.
